Tungsten rings are becoming increasingly popular as a jewelry option due to their durability and strength. However, it’s important to note that tungsten and tungsten carbide are not the same thing. Many websites and retailers will use the two terms interchangeably, which can be misleading. Tungsten carbide is actually an alloy of tungsten and predominantly carbon, with other metals such as nickel, titanium, and cobalt also being used. Tungsten carbide is extremely strong and durable on its own, but when combined with other metals it becomes even stronger and more resistant to damage.

The tungsten carbide-cobalt alloy is also referred to as cemented carbide, solid carbide, or hardmetal. Tungsten carbide-cobalt is a highly abrasion resistant material that can withstand high temperatures, and can therefore be used in cutting applications where steel tools would quickly wear or break. Carbide tools generally maintain a sharper cutting edge than standard tools, and can operate at higher speeds, which allows them to be used for larger cuts.

When used in mining, tungsten carbide is often used in top hammer rock drill bits, roller-cutters, long wall plough chisels, raiseboring reamers, and tunnel boring machines. In these applications tungsten carbide is usually utilised as a button insert, mounted in a surrounding matrix of softer steel. As the tungsten carbide button is worn away, the softer steel matrix erodes as well, exposing more of the hard tungsten carbide.
